With odds-on favourites falling on a regular basis in this year’s edition of the YKBA, these are wild times we’re living in. So wild that only two weeks into the season one GNWT employee reportedly shut down the off-court betting and booze can he’d been running out of his garage, saying the upsets were simply costing him too much. And it’s fair to say Ren Bessara’s the man responsible for putting this bookie out of business.
After a year’s hiatus from league play, Bessara’s returned to provide the kind of high-octane scoring punch missing from last year’s rookie Ringers’ squad. Once past a defender, he’s a threat to go all the way, pull up and swish a jumper, or drop a dime to a streaking teammate. This season he’s scored as many as 36 points in a game, and regularly posts 20-plus. To be named this week’s top player Bessara put in 27 in a win against the Medic North Mavs and 25 in a Sunday night toppling of Surly Bob’s.
Yes, we hear all those Cory Taylor fans howling about how the committee overlooked C-train’s 48-point night against the Ringers. While there’s no question Taylor’s performance was impressive, we’ll take Bessara’s 27 and a win any night of the year. |
